This qualitative survey captures the reasons why 201 US based mothers birthed via Caesarean section (CS) and their experiences recovering from this major, yet routine, surgical procedure.
Despite measures to reduce Caesarean section(CS) rates, 31.8% of babies in the USA were delivered by CS in 2020. Reasons for a mother requiring a CS delivery are complex, including medical, psychosocial, and cultural factors. Despite the routine nature of a CS delivery, a mother undergoes major abdominal surgery with an extended recovery time impacting her ability to breastfeed or care for new her new baby and herself.
